Barka Desalination Company has been founded by a consortium comprising ITOCHU Corporation, ENGIE, SUEZ, and WJ Towell Group who are global leaders in the water industry.

ITOCHU has a track record of more than 30 years in water business. Building on the strong platform in desalination plants in the Middle East, ITOCHU is rapidly expanding their presence in the broader water and waste management sector. In addition to desalination, their operational scope now expands full-service concession and privatization, drinking water & wastewater treatment BOT/BOO & EPC, and O&M and service business around the world, including Australia, Oman, UK, and Spain.


ENGIE is a global reference in low-carbon energy and services with 2019 revenues of 64.1 billion euros and 170,000 employees. In the GCC, ENGIE is a long-term investor with a presence of over 20 years, which pioneered the regional Independent Water & Power business with the Manah project in Oman. ENGIE has a regional portfolio of 28.5 GW power and almost 1,300 MIGD water production. It is a leading provider of energy services in the Middle East via ENGIE Solutions, and of district cooling solutions via Tabreed, in which it has a 40% stake.


With approximately 90,000 people over the five continents, and a 150-year old history, SUEZ is a world leader managing more than 7.6 billion of cubic meter of potable water a year. SUEZ has been present in the Middle East for over 60 years involved in the development of innovative solutions in water and waste management to meet the challenge of securing resources. SUEZ was in charge of the construction and is currently operating the plant on top of its investor responsibilities.


WJ Towell is one of the largest groups of companies in Oman with businesses spanning across seven major clusters: retail, engineering, construction, property, services & trade, consumer products and automotive. Besides Oman, WJ Towell has presence across the GCC and India. It also has successful joint ventures in real estate, FMCG, construction, manufacturing, engineering & industrial and distribution & services.
